Reference Number:  , Press Release Issue Date: Aug 13, 2021

From the 31st of July till the 2nd of August 2021, His Excellency André Spiteri, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Japan, paid a visit to Ise City. This was a follow-up visit to the locality, following the previous one in August 2018.

On the 1st of August, the Ambassador visited Ise Shrine. This shrine is dedicated to the sun god Amaterasu which has two thousand years of history and is one of holiest shrines in all Japan. The Ambassador was accompanied by a Shinto priest to the Naiku (内宮) or inner shrine where he paid his respects. Following the ceremony, the Ambassador signed the official guestbook.

On the 2nd of August, the Ambassador had a cordial meeting with the mayor of Ise City, Mr. Kenichi Suzuki at the City Hall. Both sides committed to strengthen relations between Malta and Ise City after their initial meeting three years ago. Also present during the meeting was Ms. Sarah Bouhlel, who is the second Maltese JET Programme participant in Ise City in which she described her life and experience in Ise. The JET Programme offers university graduates positions for full-time jobs as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in elementary and secondary schools across Japan. Malta joined this initiative in 2018.

The Ambassador also met members of the Ise Boys and Girls Choir who visited Malta when Valletta was the European Capital of Culture in 2018. Following this visit, the School of Performing Arts [SOPA] Music School Choir from Malta visited Ise in 2019 and held a joint concert on 30 July at the Hinjitsu-Kan Museum.
